Hi [[firstname]]
It’s been a while since my last update but a few things have happened or are happening that I wanted to update you on:
Firstly we have a few wins to celebrate. Recently our squash 8th team, the junior team, were successful in winning the Riley Cup. After 4 rounds they made it to the final against York and triumphed, an incredible achievement for such a young team! Also huge congratulations to Diane Fenwick who has just been crowned champion of the women’s B event at the UK Racketball Championships. I’m also pleased to report that Junior player Ruben Thewsey has won this year’s U13’s North Yorkshire cup by winning 4 of the 5 rounds and coming 2nd in the other!
I’m also very pleased to report a couple of changes at the club. The first is hopefully obvious to anyone who has been at the club recently and seen the shiny new courts which have now had a full repaint and clean. The courts are looking incredible! Please help us keep them that way by always wearing non marking soles and using racket protectors. Now that the courts are complete you should see the corridors and common areas get some TLC over the next couple of weeks.
I’m also delighted to announce that Owen Willis has now come onboard as our new Bar Manager. Owen will be working 20 hours a week and will be helping us to continue moving the club forward in a wide range of ways. Please give Owen a warm welcome when you see him on the bar.
I’m happy to report that our junior training section at the club is thriving thanks to the hard work of Steve Everitt, Matt Everitt, Neil Bromley and their team. Coaching sessions are available for all ages on a Saturday and there’s even a couple of summer school days coming up. Take a look at the attached posters for more info and contact details.
In other positive news, following your recent feedback, there will soon be a relaunch of the Squash and Racquetball mini leagues. This should be happening in line with the new squash season so please keep an eye out for details of how you can get involved which will be communicated soon. If you are not currently playing team squash but would like to get involved this year, please email comps@wiggintonsquash.co.uk to register your interest.
Looking forward to this weekend, I’m sure you’ll all be aware that WiggyFest takes place on the playing fields this Saturday. You might not be aware that we are hosting an afterparty at the club with York Renowned singer Simon Snaize who will be “on stage” from just after 9pm and will keep us entertained tor the rest of the night. Please come along and join us for what promises to be a great day and night.
Finally, I’ve spoken quite a lot about the proposed improvements to the club on these updates and at dedicated meetings. There have been a few changes to these plans which I’d like to update on now, with a view to giving you all more detail at another dedicated event in the coming months when a few more elements are finalised.
We have now had confirmation from Planning at the Council that both the Padel and extension elements of our proposal will not receive planning permission as it stands. This is down to too many objections, which is a huge shame as, on the whole, our neighbours were very supportive of the plans. Unfortunately a large amount of members of one of the other clubs on the Playing Fields submitted objections on mass towards the end of the planning window. This has ultimately put a stop to these 2 elements as they are. I’d like to take this opportunity to ensure everyone that myself and the committee did our due diligence in speaking to all clubs based on the playing fields before planning went in. we’ve strived to work with together with all clubs throughout the process since the first playing fields meeting where this was discussed and the proposal was voted for in favour unanimously.
Nevertheless, we have continued to work hard and have come up with a revised plan which we hope to ratify with members soon. Presently we plan to remove these 2 elements from the planning application securing planning for the lift and frontage as planned, as well as minor amends to the back area to allow us to create an improved and more inviting beer garden. We then hope to work with the Playing Fields association on a planning application which they are submitting, and as part of this we hope to install Padel in a different location on the site. There are a few bridges to cross here and of course approval from members, but more info will follow on this in due course. In the meantime, we will secure planning for the elements we can get and work with WSPFA on a plan for Padel.
As always, if anyone has any comments or concerns please let me know
Thanks
Carl
